...with white acrylic directly on record albums, portraits of musicians and entertainers celebrate their creative contributions.
Building on my background in sculpture and rapidograph dot drawings, I use the unique canvas of the LP to create dramatic compositions that spark conversations. Is that a real record? Is that on the record? Is it done with a computer? Is it still playable?
FAQ
Are those actually painted on the record?
They are! Each piece is hand-painted with white acrylic on the vinyl.
Will the paint peel over time?
According to Wikipedia and the art community, acrylic paint will not crack or yellow. The paint sticks surprisingly well to the vinyl, getting into the grooves. You'd have to scratch it to damage it.
Will you do special commissions?
Definitely. I enjoy connecting with people passionate about music or looking for the perfect unique gift for the music-lover in their family. It's great to have a story to go along with a piece of art.
I can discuss your piece with you via email or phone and then send you a PayPal email invoice.
Please do contact me if you're at all uncomfortable with the way PayPal works, or if you want multiple portraits.
We'll figure out how to get you what you want.
How does payment work?
I have PayPal email an invoice to you which you can pay with PayPal or credit card. You don't need to have a PayPal account.
I will also accept personal checks and will give out my address on request. I do take payment in advance, so I'll find the record for you and get started on your piece when I receive your check.
Can I choose the image you use?
I'll give you options, if you'd like to be involved in that step. High-contrast and side-lit photographs work the best, but I can make that special picture work for you.
Can I choose the album you use?
Please do let me know if you have a preference. I know certain albums mean more to you than others and I want your piece to capture your passion for the music.
The only caveat to this choice is that if I don't already have the album on hand, I'll have to add anything over $10 into the cost of the piece.
Can I send you an album to use?
Yes! Makes for an even better story. I'll discount the price $10.
Can you paint more than one portrait on one record?
Yes, up to 4 works out well. The faces stay big enough to capture the subject.
How do you frame them?
I frame them with the original album sleeve behind in a shiny black aluminum LP frame. Simple, elegant.
How long will it take for me to get mine?
I ask for you to give me about a month. The time depends largely on how long it takes me to find the album to use, but I'll let you know if it will take any longer than 5 weeks.
Do you give discounts if I buy one of each of, say, The Beatles?
Yes. If you want a complete band or the main group members, each on their own record, you'll pay a group rate. Also, you'll only pay shipping for one. Contact me first and I'll send you a PayPal email invoice.
Where do you sign them?
I sign on the label along the edge.
Will you paint people other than musicians and singers?
If they're related in some way to the recording on the album, then yes.
Will you discount the shipping if I buy more than one?
Yes, you'll only pay for shipping on one. Let me know by phone or email if you want to buy more than one and I'll send you a PayPal email invoice just for you!
Will you ship internationally?
Yes, and the cost is just $40 more for framed pieces.
Can the record still be played?
I love this question! The painted side would sound quite horrible and most likely gunk up the needle, but the other side might still play decently. I try to find records that are already damaged to the point they might be thrown away, so most likely you wouldn't want to risk it anyway.
